Folksy Exhibitionism

Posted in quirky, random at 3:46 pm by merelyquirky

Browsing online is one of the few unplanned things in my day. I try to take my fun where I can find it, but that is fewer places these days. Semi-random clicking on links costs me nothing and, like Gump’s famous box of chocolates, you never know what you’re gonna get.

Today I came across this slide show on wowOwow, in which six columnists took photos of the contents of their purses, like a more whimsical version of The Things They Carried, by Tim O’Brien.

I am very much a pack rat– my standard excuse is that I was raised by an Eagle Scout. (“Be prepared”, remember?) I still think those ladies did some weeding out before taking those photos, but here is what is in my purse:

  • medicine cabinet (Aleve, bandaids, ‘feminine products’, inhaler, allergy medicine)
  • office (pens, calendar, note pad, mail)
  • wallet, coins
  • beauty supplies (tissues, tooth brush, comb, hair band/ elastic,  makeup form a party 4 months ago, nail file, lip balm)
  • gum
  • store cards I took out of my over-stuffed wallet that were duplicates of keytags, but they still never left the purse.

and that goes in a larger tote with: gloves, spare jacket, book(s), newspaper(s), lunch, more mail.

Luckily, that doesn’t even get into my back-up supplies in the car (ice scraper, spare gloves, instant heating pads, tissues, spare book, spare coat….) It is winter in New England.

I have actually been stuck in my car after an ice storm sitting in the middle of the highway, unable to exit, just waiting for the highway department to clear an accident. For three hours. In a car with a broken heater. But I was prepared. I was toasty warm, and had a book to read.

    Being a pack-rat pays.
